Sulfur hexafluoride is a nonflammable, colorless, odorless, tasteless, nontoxic and relatively unreactive gas which has been described quite often as an inert gas [42]. The current OSHA standard for allowable maximum concentration for human exposure in air is 6000 mg/m3 (1000 ppm) TWA [43]. However, it must be noted that breakdown products, SF4, SOF4, SOF2 from electric decomposition are toxic and are often scrubbed by passing over activated alumina, soda lime, or molecular sieves during maintenance [44].
